About
ESCA
Our mission is to help students fundraise for charity.
Where
We Started
Edinburgh Students’ Charities Appeal (ESCA) was founded in 1867 by a group of students from the University of Edinburgh, who were shocked at the impoverished conditions that many Old Town Edinburgh residents found themselves living in.
The initial aims of the charity were focused on collecting clothes and other donations to allow some relief to the striking poverty that was impacting so many people in the city.
Where
We Are
Now
ESCA has grown significantly since its humble beginnings, and what once focused on collections is now a thriving charitable fundraising organisation.
We fund popular and innovative events which are run by students from various universities across Edinburgh in order to raise money for other charities.
ESCA funds and supports the core brands of Edinburgh Raising and Giving (RAG) and the Meadows Marathon, as well as allowing other students to get involved in fundraising through support workshops, grant funding, and the Edinburgh Award for Charitable Fundraising.
Our
Next
5 Years
As we progress through the next five years, our core aims include:
-
Supporting our students to reach their full potential.

-
Increase our fundraising totals.

-
Aiming to support more students in achieving their Edinburgh Award.

-
Continue to grow our community and charity outreach.

-
Promote our sustainability agenda.
Edinburgh RAG
Edinburgh RAG is our student fundraising committee. They work hard to raise money for multiple charities each year, especially our main 3 beneficiary charities.
They do this in a number of ways but are perhaps most famous for their legendary sponsored hitchhike events to Paris, Amsterdam and other European cities and RAG Week.

Meadows Marathon
Meadows Marathon is an annual student-organised running event held in the Meadows in Edinburgh to raise money for local, national and international charities. One of ESCA's largest initiatives, the event has raised over £200,000 for charity since its inception in 2007.
It now incorporates 5K, 10K, Half Marathon, Full Marathon distances and a relay into a packed day of running each March.
